Hi! We’re Jess & Jason

Welcome to The Basil Spoon Family!

We were married in 2019 and we've been perfecting our family recipes ever since!

Thank you for visiting us at

The Basil Spoon!

I’m Jess and along with my husband, Jason, we’re bringing you some of our favorite family recipes.

An engineer by trade, Jason is all about finding the BEST way to make every dish and tweaking a recipe until it is perfect.

I’m the more adventurous cook and I’m always willing to try a new recipe or a spin on a classic.

Jason hails from North Carolina and I’m from Idaho.

We met, married, and now live in Roanoke, VA, with our 2 children and 2 miniature labradoodles.

We believe the some of the best memories are made in the kitchen and around the dinner table.

What started as simple but constant experimentation in our home kitchen quickly evolved into a deep-rooted obsession with flavor and perfecting recipes.

This recipe blog is the evolution of that journey—a dedicated space where we share everything from the nostalgic comfort foods we grew up with to the bold, new recipes we’re discovering today.

Our Recipe Goals:

Our First Priority: Delicious & Dependable

Our primary focus for recipes is deliciousness and dependability. That’s why we personally test every recipe several times before sharing it. We want every recipe you find to be a home-run for your family.

Our Second Priority: Healthy & Nutritious

Our next goal is that our recipes are healthy and nutritious. They aren’t all going to be perfect – sometimes you need some comfort food! However, we love to tweak recipes to make them good for your body.

This means we focus on whole foods, minimal processed ingredients, low sugar and reduced fats (moderation is key!). I also personally love any recipe where I can sneak in a vegetable or two.

Special Categories: Postpartum and Toddler Meals

As a Mom, I have a special passion for recipes that are particularly helpful in two categories: postpartum preparation and toddler-friendly meals.

When you’re pregnant and/or raising a tiny human (or tiny humans), it’s important to be able to prepare meals that are uniquely needed during these developing times. You’ll find these two categories have their own segments in this website so Mama’s and Mama’s-to-be can find what they need quickly.

Jess & Jason's Family Recipe Fun Facts...

Jess’s family’s favorite dinner is called Floor Nachos. Whenever they have family reunions, these Sheet Pan Nachos are always requested. They’ve shared these beloved nachos everywhere from Idaho to Virginia to Hawaii!

Jason has developed The BEST French Toast You’ll Ever Make. If you’re looking for a French Toast recipe that is never soggy and always delicious, you should give this a try!

04. Birthday Carrot Cake

Jess’s favorite dessert is Jason’s Carrot Cake with Buttercream Frosting. She requests it every year for her birthday.

05. Weekend Ritual

Every Saturday morning, we have a tradition of making breakfast together— Jess cracks the eggs, and Jason handles the bacon, scrambled eggs, and bacon toast!
